Indoor/Outdoor Wellness Facility

The Karen M. & Jefferson W. Kirby Gymnasium is new construction (2007) added during the renovation phase of 342 Central. The 15,000 square foot indoor space houses a full size basketball court and can be divided into two separate basketball courts by a sliding curtain. The gymnasium is also lined for volleyball and tennis.  The gymnasium is flanked by a fully framed performance stage with professional lighting, an eighteen speaker audio unit, and the latest electronic visual equipment for performances and presentations.  Indoor seating capacity is 600 people.

The back of the stage area is set with three large garage doors.  Filled with windows, these doors allow for significant natural light in the gymnasium, as well as fresh air during warmer months. They also allow for the flexibility of a dual performance space. With the doors open, the stage is fully functional for an outdoor performance. This includes a customized curtain design and outdoor lighting for the stage area. Outdoor seating capacity for is 700.

The gym serves as a multipurpose space. During the day it accommodates two physical education classes simultaneously, recess, activities, and all school assemblies.  At the close of the school day it becomes available for after school activities, athletic practices, and performance club rehearsals.  Evenings and weekends it is used as our official performance and event space. As the facility was designed as a community development asset, the space is also available to community organizations.

The area outside the gym is separated into age appropriate spaces.  The upper level is designed for grades K-4 with playground equipment and cushioned, rubberized play surfaces.  On ground level is another rubberized surface for additional play and a large turf field.  The outdoor areas are utilized for gym classes as well as recess and activities.

The gymnasium is especially designed to support the Outdoor Learning Center and Rooftop Gardens above it.   The typical gymnasium roof supports 60-80 pounds per square is constructed to hold 350 pounds per square foot versus a standard roof, which supports 60-80 pounds per square foot.  The garden adds additional insulation to the gymnasium thus allowing for reduced heating and cooling costs.  The gym is heated through a radiant floor heating system along with a separate rooftop unit controlled separately from the rest of the building with jets that force the air to the ground.
